OCIA - Becoming catholic

A Journey of Faith, Community and Encounter with Christ

have you or a loved one been considering becoming catholic?

Perhaps you have been attending Mass, have a Catholic spouse or family member, or simply feel drawn to learn more about the Catholic faith. Maybe you have been searching for something deeper—a relationship with Jesus Christ and a community where you can grow in faith.

You are welcome here.

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the process through which adults and older children explore the Catholic faith and, when ready, enter into full communion with the Catholic Church.

what is ocia?

OCIA stands for the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is a journey for those who are considering becoming Catholic, as well as for those who were baptized Catholic but have not yet received all of the Sacraments of Initiation.

Through prayer, Scripture, conversation, teaching, and participation in the life of the parish, participants gradually come to know Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.

There is no pressure to make a decision before you are ready. This is a journey, not a test.

what happens during ocia?

OCIA typically meets regularly throughout the year in a welcoming and informal setting.

Together, we explore questions such as:

Who is Jesus Christ?
What does it mean to have a relationship with Him?

What do Catholics believe?

Why does the church matter?

How do Catholics pray and worship?

How do I live my faith?

We explore the Creed, Scripture, the Sacraments, prayer, the Church, and Catholic teaching.

We discover how Jesus continues His mission through His Church and His people.
We learn about the Mass, the Eucharist, the liturgical year, and the many ways Catholics encounter God.

Following Christ changes the way we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. We explore what it means to live as a disciple.

Most importantly, there is time for conversation and questions. OCIA is not simply a class where someone talks and everyone listens. It is a community walking together and discovering what God may be asking of each of us.

WHO IS OCIA FOR?

OCIA may be right for you if you:

  • Have never been baptized and are interested in becoming Catholic.

  • Were baptized in another Christian tradition and are considering becoming Catholic.

  • Were baptized Catholic but did not receive Confirmation and/or First Communion.

A JOURNEY, NOT A CHECKLIST

Everyone comes to OCIA from a different place.

Some people arrive with years of questions. Others know very little about Catholicism. Some have experienced a powerful moment that drew them toward God. Others simply have a sense that something is missing and want to explore.

Wherever you are starting from, you belong in the conversation.

The goal is not simply to complete a series of lessons. The goal is to encounter Christ, grow in faith, and discern God's call.

Along the way, you will have opportunities to pray, learn, ask questions, build friendships, and become part of the life of our parish community.

What if I'm not sure I want to become Catholic?

That's okay.

You don't have to be sure.

OCIA is a place to explore the Catholic faith without pressure or obligation. Come with your questions. Bring experiences and your curiosity.

We invite you to take the next step and discover what God may be inviting you to discover.
